Miawpukek 30th Annual First Nation Powwow (2025)

Dates: August 2–3, 2025
Location: Miawpukek First Nation, Conne River, Newfoundland

This summer, the heartbeat of Mi’kmaq culture will echo through the South Coast of Newfoundland as the Miawpukek First Nation hosts its 30th Annual Powwow—a vibrant and powerful celebration of Indigenous heritage, community, and spirit. Set within the beautiful natural landscape of Conne River, this beloved gathering brings together dancers, drummers, artists, elders, and guests from across the Mi’kmaq Nation and beyond.

About the Powwow

Recognized as the only First Nation reserve on the island of Newfoundland, Miawpukek (pronounced “Mee-aw-boo-gek”) serves as a vital cultural hub for the Mi’kmaq people. Their annual Powwow is not just a tradition—it is a homecoming, a celebration, and an educational experience woven into the very land from which their stories rise.

In honor of Come Home Year 2025, this year’s event will feature a special social night on Friday, August 1st, followed by two full days of celebration, ceremony, and community.

The Powwow is hosted by Stoney Bear Drum Group from Eskasoni, NS, with invited drum Spirit Bay from Flat Bay, NL. The event will be led by Female Head Dancer Sabrina Muise, Male Head Dancer Peter Doucette, and Emcee Mike Doucette.

Visitors are invited not only to witness but to participate: to dance, eat, laugh, and connect.

This Powwow also underscores the importance of cultural continuity. Through sacred ceremonies, traditional songs, crafts, and communal feasts, the event embodies the strength of Mi’kmaq heritage while warmly welcoming friends, travelers, and allies.
